Biography
Nils van Otterloo was born in 1975 in Frankin, New Hampshire, to immigrants from the Netherlands, Eijk and Rose-Marie, who eventually settled in Marblehead, Massachussetts. Nils had a keen interest in music from an early age, having been exposed to everything from Bach to Beethoven to the Beatles and back, he took guitar lessons from age five and flute lessons from age eight. In highschool Nils began to play the bass and performed with a number of bands, often traveling to other schools to compete in Battle of the Bands competitions. Nils’ interests broadened from the progressive rock of the seventies to encompass Jazz and Twentieth Century Classical music, and after highschool he enrolled at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. There he learned all aspects of music Theory, Arranging, and Composition in numerous traditional genres. After two years there Nils transferred to Bates College where he studied Composition and Computer Music with Bill Matthews. After he graduated from Bates he traveled to the Netherlands where he studied Composition and Computer Music Composition with Rene Uijlenhoet at the Rotterdam Conservatory. Upon returning to the United States Nils took a job composing music and doing sound design for a video game company called 3D Open Motion. Nils then decided to return to Berklee in order to complete a degree in Music Production and Engineering. While there he studied Computer Music Composition intensely with Dr. Richard Boulanger, and he learned the techniques of numerous Software Synthesis programs inclubing Csound, SuperCollider, Max/MSP, and others. Nils produced and engineered an album by Boston hiphop MC, Kabir, which was reviewed favorably by Billboard, Spin, The Boston Globe, The Boston Phoenix and elsewhere. Following graduation from Berklee, Nils began an extensive documentation project at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, which involved recording a diverse collection of Musical Instruments, ranging from early Classical period instruments to a Balinese Gamelan, under the direction of the curator, Darcy Kuronen. Nils was accepted at New York University where he was going to study electronic music composition in the Music Technology Department, but he decided to follow his interests in Film Composing and Post-Production to Los Angeles, where he is working on a number of projects.
